Mizuno golf wedges have always been incredibly popular with amateurs and professionals alike. The current batch of wedges are divided into 3 groups-

MP T Series

The T-Series look has a straighter leading edge than the R-Series – an alignment aid favoured by many professionals. The grooves are precision milled rather than forged for the most bite or spin allowed within the rules.

The “T” stands for “Teardrop” and the sole is based around the feedback from Mizuno tour players to give you maximum feel and touch around the greens and they come in standard or custom fitted shafts.

Mizuno consider them to be suitable for low to medium high handicappers. They also come in Black Nickel, which is more expensive than the standard mild carbon steel.

MP R Series

The “R” in this series stands for “Rounded” as this wedge has a more rounded design which allows for greater range of shot making and working the ball. Like the T series they can be obtained in either mild carbon steel or black nickel and a black nickel plating or finish ensures some protection against rust and is softer than traditional chrome.

The loft of these wedges ranges from 52 degrees up to 60 degrees and you can have custom fitted or standard shafts with a huge range of lie angles.

MX Series

The difference with this group is that these are said to be suitable for all handicaps whilst the T and R series are suitable for low to mid handicaps.

These wedges are cavity backed, unlike the other 2 groups, and are incredibly to use. To assist this Mizuno have employed what they call a “Y” technology which they claim increases the sweet spot to allow for mishits, particularly high into the toe area which is a common mishit spot for most amateurs.

They also use a “Power Bar” and a “Cavity Pad” which helps with playability without sacrificing feel and control.

Mizuno golf drivers have been the poor relation in comparison to their golf irons for many years. But a huge amount of time and money has gone into the development of their latest offering..the MX 700 driver.

The first thing to be said about it is that it is an incredibly attractive looking club and designed for players of all handicap abilities.
The face of this club is manufactured with the latest space age technology from Mizuno and that is the Ti plasma face which is welded to the rest of the head and ensures stability through the hitting area.

Because of a uniquely aligned grain flow structure Mizuno claim that the sweet spot is the biggest that they have produced to date in a driver..and my testing of the product certainly can attest to that. Even on mishits I was getting an average of and extra 15 yards with my drives.

Also because the centre of gravity is low because of the Ti plasma technology, the spin rate of the ball coming off the club is significantly reduced and anyone who loves golf knows that a low spin rate combined with a high ball flight results in booming drives.

The head size is a manageable 460cc and lofts range from 9.5 degrees to 13.5 degrees and the standard shaft is the excellent Exsar DS 4 although you can get many custom shafts fitted. The length of the mens club is 45.5 inches.

For ladies you can get lofts of 12 degrees and 13.5 degrees with increased ease of use and the ladies version is 44 inches long.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this Mizuno driver, the MX 700, and will be ditching my trusty Titleist in the coming days for my own custom fitted version.

This also only comes in the blue and white colors and is ideal for trolleys as it is basically the Tour bag remodelled for the trolleys and carts that the weekend golfer uses.

Aerolite

The Aerolite bag is a very light bag which is also ideal for trolleys and stands and comes in a range of colors. It also has a dual shoulder strap and the patented Kabuki organizer top cuff.

The Twister is a carry bag which has been adapted for trolley use so it combines the best of both worlds. It has a sturdy base for quick release of the stand and also the dual shoulder strap. It too comes in a choice of colors. The large wraparound pocket can be removed which makes it an ideal carry bag in the summer time.

Scratch Sac

Cleverly titled bag ideal for low handicappers who like to carry their clubs on their back. This is an incredibly light bag which still carries 14 clubs in an unstructured fashion.

Mizuno Irons have long been the choice of many top players..before they sign multi million dollar endorsement deals with various other manufacturers.

But it is surely significant that when players are not bound by contract to play a particular brand, their weapon of choice is the mizuno iron.Tiger Woods used Mizuno irons all through college and before he turned professional. Nick Faldo used Mizuno irons to shoot a remarkable round of golf to score 18 straight pars to win the British Open.

The vast majority of Mizuno irons are forged. What does this mean?
Most golf irons are cast..this means that the clubs are made from a stainless steel alloy and made by pouring melted steel into a mould.

A forged club is made from one piece of metal by hammering and shaping heated metal into shape. Mizuno generally use mild carbon steel. This process gives a club greater consistency and performance. But it is more expensive than the more common casting method which can lead to more inconsistent performance.

Why? Because when the metal is poured into the mould, it always traps tiny bubbles inside the metal structure which can make the face inconsistent and in extreme cases leads to cracking and breaking.

Another consequence of air being trapped in the head is the different sound that a cast club will make versus a forged club. The air that is trapped in a cast club can absorb the sound of the ball leaving the club..which means that the better golfer does not get the same feedback from the strike as with a forged club.

Indeed many say that the sound of the cast club is a dull, dead sound.Which is not what the ambitious golfer wants when he is trying to hone his game.

For many years now, Mizuno irons have been the player’s choice..the coinisseur’s choice. That is until they sign the massive endorsement deal and sell out.
And who can blame them you might say?

Well you don’t have to..and if you really love the sound of a well struck iron shot and the feel which a forged iron from Mizuno can give you then you owe it to yourself to check out the Mizuno irons.

Cast clubs are basically made from a stainless steel alloy and made from a mould into which the steel alloy is poured. It is then allowed to cool and the mould is broken leaving you with the club head.

Forged clubs on the other hand are made from one piece of metal-Mizuno make theirs from mild carbon steel and the clubhead is then hammered into shape after heating.

The advantage of the forged club boils down to consistency even though it is cheaper to manufacture cast clubs. The consistency/inconsistency problem arises from the trapping of air bubbles in the casting process which can lead to a different reaction off the face of the club.

It is for this reason also that the sound of a cast iron club and a forged club striking the ball can be appreciably different. And for the accomplished golfer this sound difference is striking. This goes back again to the air bubbles trapped in the casting process.

The value of the forged club in the short game is also crucial because of the greater feel and feedback that you get from the forged Mizuno iron. And the look and feel of a forged iron versus a cast iron is of great pleasure to many golfers.

Yes the forged is more expensive… but if you are serious about your golf and want to be the best you can then the longevity of the well crafted Mizuno irons will give you enormous pleasure and satisfaction over many, many years.

Mizuno uses a range of materials in their irons including steel alloy and a mild carbon steel in their more expensive products.

Generally the mild carbon steel is only used in making forged irons, as opposed to cast irons, and the reason is that the mild carbon steel does not fill a mold as well as other materials and so is not really suitable for casting clubs.

On the other hand molten stainless steel is more liquid and hence more suitable for casting.

The advantages of forged Mizuno irons over cast comes down to consistency which comes from the absence of air bubbles getting trapped in the face of the club when forging… as the forging process involves using one lump of mild carbon steel. Casting on the other hand involves pouring a steel alloy into a mold and the mold is then broken… at the end of this process you can have trapped air bubbles in the face of the club which will lead to inconsistent performance and sound and can even lead to cracking of the club.

Casting of clubs also leads to another problem… when the club is cooling down some parts of the club are thicker than others(the top edge is thinner than the sole) which can lead to warping of the face.

Mizuno have been involved in golf club making for many many years and have wide exposure to using materials in the aerospace industry. And it is this experience and exposure to top engineering which will leave you with a superbly made golf club in your hand when you choose Mizuno Golf irons.
